A Levels

A Levels are arguably the most important exams you can take at school as they will decide whether you will go to university to undertake your chosen undergraduate course or have to go through clearing to find a similar course if your grades aren’t what you’d hoped for. There are no compulsory subjects at A Level although you should take subjects that are related to the university course you wish to study. If you’re not sure of this or your future career, it’s wise to choose strong subjects like English, Mathematics, a Science or a Humanities subject such as History or Geography or a Business related subject. At Elea High Online School, we can advise you on your A level choices and will work hard to ensure that our innovative online education will help you get the grades you need.

Our Qualifications

Elea High are committed to offering a wide range of qualifications to our students to enable them to plan their journey to their dream career.

In the English education system, recognised across the globe, students sit external exams at 15 or 16 years old and need to achieve a grade 6 (grade 5 under exceptional circumstances) to be able to progress to A levels. If your child is looking to go to university after compulsory education, they must achieve good grades in their A level exams. In addition to this, universities look for ways that students have sought to extend their learning opportunities and, most commonly, this is through the undertaking of the Extended Project Qualification which is the equivalent of half an A level and earns up to 28 UCAS points, the rubric for entry onto university courses.

Exceptionally, we find that some students are looking for one to one education to enable them to progress to their examinations at their own speed. We can offer expert one to one tuition for A levels.

Elea High offers a wide range of A Level courses including

Mathematics

English Literature

Chemistry

Biology

Physics

Business

Economics

Geography

Computer Science

Psychology

Modern Foreign Languages

These are typically studied in the last two years of formal education. Students usually need only three A levels although some study four.

These should be selected to lead into the student’s intended university course. Points are accrued depending on the grade and the total informs which universities and courses they can join.

Courses are graded from A to E.

It’s highly recommended that students consider additional, supporting qualifications or undertake activities that can boost their personal statement when applying for university. The EPQ is much sought after by universities whilst volunteering and membership of national youth organisations such as scouts or guides is also useful. Membership of competitive sports teams with regular participation is also seen as beneficial.

Mathematics

At this stage of your mathematics education, you’ll study Pure Mathematics and Mechanics or Statistics or Decision Mathematics. You’ll use advanced algebra to solve many of the problems posed.

English Literature

Your preparation work from IGCSE will enable you to analyse more complex drama texts, poetry and prose plus a range of novels. You’ll learn more about how the context influenced the works and the impact they had on society.

Physics

More complex than the IGCSE which precedes it, this course will see you studying mechanics, more on waveforms and electricity, fields and particle physics as well as thermodynamics, radiation and cosmology. Strong maths skills will come in useful.
